Suggestions for taking off silver sparkle finish? 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi

first post.. so hello! and nice to find an informative site with great info for a complete newbie.

so i have a Suier Jagmaster that has the silver sparkle finish. looks far too glam for me, so i want to have the guitar refinished in olympic white.

is there a standard method of removing the initial lacquer and paint job?.. is the glitter just sprinkled on top of the paint finish, or mixed into the lacquer itself?

i was just reading about heat guns and irons for taking off lacquer, but previously i've only ever seen/heard people sanding it back or using chemicals to remove it.

in general, for re-spraying a guitar, how far back would i need to sand? right back to the original wood, or just enough into the paint that it's rough enough to accept new primer and coats of the new colour?

thanks in advance for any help. my first project..so kind of hesitant to just wade in on it!

pic of the guitar in question..

I'd take it back to the wood and make sure it is sanded flat on the
"flat bits". You can then get a bit of practice spraying sanding
sealer and base coat before you get to the finish colour.

If thats a squire jagmaster the chances are it's a poly finish. The best way to remove poly is with a heat gun.
Dont stay in one place too long as you will scorch the wood.
