I'm putting a nice Quilted Maple cap on my latest project but I plan to use Oil and Beeswax to finish it. The Maple is quite blonde so I would like to apply an Orangey stain to tone it down a bit. But also want to bring out the figure, I am nervous that stain will mask it a little instead. Any advice would be good.

You can stain it without loosing any of the figure of the grain.
The usual way to pop the grain is to apply your stain several times over lightly rubbing down between applications. This allows the stain to penetrate deeper into the softer grain and increases the quilt effect. You can also mix colours to further enhance the grain pattern.
However, the true depth and movement of figured timber is always better with a gloss finish - so using oil and beeswax will not bring out the best in the grain.

Tried your advice and even on a test piece with limited figure, using oil and beeswax, the results were superb. Decided on oil and beeswax instead of lacquer as the body shape is very rounded and natural feeling, think 'Organic' single cut with a twist. Cheers.
