Pacific Blackwood Fingerboard 4 String Bass
Pacific Blackwood Fingerboard, 4 String Bass. Dimensions 680 x 75 x 9mm. Rough Sawn.
Pacific Blackwood (Xanthostemon Melanoxylon) is grown only on the Solomon Islands, 2000km north east of Australia. The timber is extremely rare and is harvested using sustainable processes. The tree itself only grows to 60-80cm in diameter but 35m in height. Trees harvested are around 300-500yrs old. This is a sucker tree which grows/regenerate from roots after a fire has been through and the mother tree dies.
The area it grows in is prone to fire as the soil often attracts lightning
(due to high metal contents in soil) causing fire.
This species is mostly found in groups which grow in low diversity lowland
forest on ultramafic-derived Soils. Ultramafic-derived soils are deep, freely draining yellowish-red or -brown clays and loams, typically with high mineral levels (chromium and nickel or magnesium).
