Flame maple, has a beautiful figure giving the appearance of wavy lines or "flame".  It is also known as curly maple, fiddleback or tiger stripe.  The figure runs perpendicular to the grain so working the timber with sharp tools is straightforward.  

It is most often used to put a decorative top on electric guitars where the flame "shimmers" depending on how the light hits it. 

Sold in book-matched pairs, these tops are anything from 3/8 to 1 inch thick (10-25mm), and are overlaid on a mahogany, ash, or alder body. It is also used to create a striking guitar neck.
